Low-Prep Christmas Classroom Activities for K–3

By Robby Jay · October 21, 2026

The weeks before winter break are full of excitement, short attention spans and a lot of glitter. The best Christmas classroom activities keep kids learning while they have fun, and they don't eat up your evenings. Here are low-prep ideas for kindergarten through 3rd grade that work in almost any classroom.

Morning work that settles the room

  • Holiday word searches and mazes. Quiet, independent and easy to differentiate by difficulty.
  • Christmas coloring pages with a twist. Add a sight-word or color-by-number key so coloring doubles as practice.
  • Journal prompts. "If I could give my family any gift, it would be..." or "Describe the best snow day ever."

Literacy centers

  • Letter to Santa writing. Younger students draw and label; older students practice friendly-letter format with a greeting, body and closing.
  • Holiday ABC order. Write Christmas words on cards (bell, cookie, elf, gift, snow) and have students put them in order.
  • Build-a-sentence. Mix noun, verb and place cards ("The reindeer" / "slid" / "down the hill") and let kids build silly sentences.

Math centers

  • Ornament counting. Students count ornament stickers or drawings and match them to number cards.
  • Gift-wrap measuring. Measure "presents" (classroom objects) with cubes or a ruler and record the lengths.
  • Cookie addition. Two plates of paper cookies make an easy visual for addition and subtraction stories.

Crafts that don't need a glitter cleanup crew

  • Paper chain countdown to winter break, one link per day.
  • Handprint reindeer cards to send home to families.
  • Student-made gift tags for the gifts they're bringing home.

Brain breaks

Try "Reindeer, Santa, Snowman" (a holiday twist on red light, green light), a freeze dance to a holiday song, or Christmas charades with simple actions like wrapping a present or building a snowman.

The class party

Keep the party simple with stations: one for a craft, one for a game like Christmas bingo, and one for a snack. Short rotations keep everyone busy and make it easy for parent volunteers to help.

Skip the prep entirely: the Christmas Classroom Pack has 15 low-prep K–3 pages, bookmarks and student gift tags, ready to print.
